Delivering Change: Space Solar Catalyses New UK Government’s Ambitions

With a commitment to investing £7.3 billion to early-stage energy projects and leveraging private investment through the National Wealth Fund, Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) aligns perfectly to achieving the new Labour government’s mission driven green ambitions. With the UK Infrastructure Bank set to start scoping projects immediately, we’re happy to say that Space Solar is primed and ready to help the UK compete globally in green tech innovation.

Delivering clean power by 2030.

Space Based Solar Power will be critical in supporting, and achieving, Labour’s ambition for clean power by 2030, as well as global Net Zero by 2050. Less than six years away from delivering low carbon power from space, SBSP promises abundant, secure and reliable energy which could save billions on household bills, enhance energy security and provide an efficient alternative to traditional energy sources. Space Solar’s pioneering tech is leading the way with our patented concept CASSIOPeiA – the smallest, lightest and cheapest design for delivering baseload energy in the world.

SBSP applications, far and near…

Following independent analysis by the UK government which shows that SBSP can unlock huge economic benefits for the UK, the future’s looking bright for Space Solar.

Our mission over the next 6 years will deliver a 30MW system and commercial power to a range of energy markets like data centres, mining, maritime whilst also enabling a new era of space enabled growth through our in-space robotic assembly. Nearer-term we’re looking at applications of our wireless power transmission technology. Beaming energy to mobile assets or across the country, wireless power transmission has a huge range of applications.  It offers an alternative to the miles and miles of transmission cables in our countryside, supporting the government’s goal to solve grid constraints, and lengthy connection queues.  Like the transformation in communications, the future of power is wireless.

Beyond 2030, SBSP has the potential to become a continuous and reliable source of clean energy, transmitted instantaneously anywhere in the world, in all weather conditions, 24/7 – whilst reducing the overall cost of a decarbonised energy system. Alongside that, SBSP could unlock 143,000, high value, green jobs and billions of pounds in exports.

Space Solar proves the UK is ‘open for business’

With the new government placing a big emphasis on strengthening EU and international collaboration, SBSP offers the perfect opportunity to support green power alliances, help shape international climate policies and bring about Net Zero by 2050. With £5M in grants from commercial partners and the UK government via their SBSP innovation programme, alongside strong support from previous government officials and ministers, we look forward to accelerating development of this revolutionary technology with the new government .

As a first-mover in SBSP, Space Solar has already engaged extensively with Whitehall on funding and partnerships. We’re working collaboratively with key industrial partners, and over 90 organisations involved in the Space Energy Initiative. We’ve also been exploring international partnerships with Canada, Japan, Europe, Gulf States, and the US, to name a few.

With the backing of government officials, private entities and international stakeholders, Space Solar has demonstrated that the UK is open for business – and ready to deliver clean, abundant energy on a global scale.

The rise of the new government  makes this an exciting time at Space Solar. With a bold ambition for clean power by 2030, we’re encouraged to see Labour taking real action to deliver on their promises, as evidenced by their £7.3 billion investment into early-stage clean energy projects, comprehensive green industrial strategy and open support of SBSP.  We are here to support the transition and to deliver new industries to power a bright future.
